What is Secure Browser? How does it Prevents Cheating?
In ThinkExam (TE), the Secure Browser is a locked-down browser designed to ensure that candidates take an exam in a controlled environment. It helps minimize opportunities for cheating by restricting access to other applications, websites, and system functions during the test.
How the Secure Browser Helps Prevent Cheating
Restricts access to other applications
- Candidates cannot switch to other applications such as browsers, PDF readers, chat apps, or note-taking tools while the exam is in progress.
Blocks keyboard shortcuts
- Common shortcuts such as Alt + Tab, Windows key, Ctrl + Esc, and other combinations used to switch applications or access system functions are disabled.
Prevents opening new browser tabs or windows
- Candidates cannot browse the internet or search for answers during the exam.
Disables copy, paste, and print functions
- This prevents candidates from copying questions, pasting external content, or printing the exam.
Restricts screen capture
- The Secure Browser helps prevent screenshots and screen recording. If it detects any screen recording or screen capture software installed or running on the device, it prompts the candidate to remove or disable the application before launching the exam.
Locks the exam environment
- The test runs in full-screen mode, and attempts to exit or minimize the browser can be blocked.
Restricts right-click and developer tools
- The Secure Browser disables the right-click context menu and prevents access to browser developer tools, ensuring candidates cannot inspect, alter, or manipulate the exam interface.
What It Does Not Prevent
A secure browser alone cannot stop every form of cheating. For example, it cannot prevent:
- Using another physical device (such as a mobile phone).
- Receiving assistance from another person.
- Looking at handwritten notes kept outside the camera's view.
For these scenarios, the Secure Browser is typically combined with AI or live proctoring, webcam monitoring, microphone monitoring, and browser activity tracking to provide a more secure examination process.
