What is Word Parser

 

Word Parser is an MS Word plugin used to read questions from a Word document and upload them to the Think 8.0 and Think X.

 

Steps for installing Word Parser:-


Step 1: Navigate to “Admin - settings” on the right side of the screen.



Step 2: On the left menu - click on “Word Parser and then click on “Go to download”

 


   


Step 3: Download both files listed under Prerequisite Installer. If they are already installed, you can skip this step. Next, check your MS Word version by opening MS Word and selecting File



Help or, in some versions, File About Word. Then, download and install the corresponding Word Parser setup (64-bit or 32-bit).


 Step 4: After downloading, extract the file and complete the installation. Once finished, you will see the option to launch Think Exam Word Parser check that box and click on finish.




Step 5: Once the initial installation is complete, an additional setup will launch automatically. If it does not, a file named Think Exam Word Parser will appear on your desktop. Open it and complete the installation.


 

Step 6: After the installation is complete - Open a Microsoft word file. Click on the Think Exam Word parser option available at the top of the ribbon.




Step 7: Enter the URL, ID & Password of your Think Exam panel and then click on activate.





Formatting instructions for a Word file based on the tool's requirements:

Adding multiple choice questions:





For multiple choice questions you need to ensure that the selected option in the “Question Pattern” dropdown matches the question text.

For example : In Image 1 the “question pattern” is Q.1 and in Image 2 the question text starts with Q.6. You need to follow the same format for all the questions. If you have a set of 50 questions and the selected question pattern is Q.1, you must start all the question text as Q. followed by the question number.

Similarly select the “Option Pattern & “Answer Pattern”.

 

The “solution pattern” is not required if you do not want to add any solutions to your questions.




 

Select the “default” option if all the questions are MCQs. If not, select the “question type” from the drop down.

 

Adding Passage or Essay type questions:

For Passage based questions - you may select “essay type” & “merge type” question format.



 

What is an Essay type question?

In Essay Type, the questions are displayed on the right side of the passage




 

What is a Merge type question?

In Merge type, the questions are below the passage.

 





Adding “Essay type” questions:

For “essay type” questions, select D-X in the dropdown.




 

Start your passage with D-X (As shown in the image below)






Add the questions associated with the passage in the chosen “question pattern” format and similarly add the options and the correct answers.

 

After you've included all the questions related to the passage in the Word file, at the point where the questions conclude, please insert ##End Essay (As shown in the image above)




Adding “Merge type” questions:

For “merge type” questions, select M-X in the dropdown.




 


Start your passage with M-X. (As shown in the image below)




 Add the questions associated with the passage in the chosen “question pattern” format and similarly add the options and the correct answers.





After you've included all the questions related to the passage in the Word file, at the point where the questions conclude, please insert ##End Merge (As shown in the image above)

Add the essay group name in the section. (You can write any name as per the passage)





What are list type or statement questions?

List type questions are a form of statement-based questions where you are given a set of items (like people, places, or things) along with a set of attributes (such as times, colors, or activities). Based on the clues provided, you need to logically connect each item with the correct attribute or arrange them in the right order.




 

 

Adding List Type questions

F2 if you want the pattern in I., II., III. format. Other list types may be chosen as required.


 

Add ##Start List F2 before the statements and Add ##End List at the end of the question.


 

 

 

Reading Tables Using Word Parser :

 

To read tables in a Word file using the Word Parser, you need to insert ##Start Table above the table and ##End Table below the table, as shown below.

 


After processing the Word file, the table will appear in the demo preview as shown below.


How to read questions:

Place your Cursor before at the beginning of the text and then click on read now.




After your file has been read successfully, click on Demo Preview to preview the questions added. Then click on “next




Select the subject and the topic in which you want to add the questions in. You can select the default option to add all the questions in a particular subject / topic.

If you have added questions for different subjects / topics, you can enter the question number in “from” and “to” so the questions can be accordingly mapped in the system and then click on “next” again




Add the “right marks” & click on assign to map the marks for all questions. Similarly, add “wrong marks”, click on assign and then on “save”. After that click on next”. You can click on the “publish” button to add the questions.




Importing Answers Using Tag Sheet:-

If you prefer not to include the answers in the Word file, or do not want to manually select the subject and assign marks for the question, you can use the tag sheet instead. The tag sheet contains all the necessary details of the questions.

For example, Question 1 belongs to the subject Maths under the topic Algebra. It is a Multiple Choice question with difficulty level Beginner, right mark 2, and wrong mark 0. An example of the tag sheet format is shown in the image below.



 

 

How to use tag sheet:

If you want to use a tagsheet while uploading questions, enable the Import Tag Sheet option as shown in the image below.




 

 

How to download a tag sheet:

 

Once the file is read, click on Download Sample Tag Sheet to download the template. After downloading, fill in the required data, then click Choose File, select the updated file, and upload it.





Once this is done, you can proceed to the next step, where the marks and subject will already be associated with the question.




 

At this stage, you may click on next to proceed to create a test or upload questions based on your requirement.





How to create a test using Word Parser:

Click on the “Do you want to create a test” check box to create a test from word parser. Add the “test name”, “test duration” & “total marks” and the click on the “publish” button.





Key Points:

 

1.    It is important to verify that the format of the Word document is accurate, including the alignment of questions, options, answers, and solutions with the designated patterns in the ribbon.

2.    If your question contains tables, you will have to convert the tables into images and then add it to your word file.

3.    Ensure that you are using the latest version of Microsoft Word (Recommended version- 10 or above).

4.    If you are creating a test through word parser, you will have to select a test category in the test ( go to test manager on the think exam panel - click on the three dots against the test - click on edit, then select the category, template and publish your test)

5.    If you are unable to read the file, try uninstalling & reinstalling word parser.

6.    To logout of word parser from your computer’s local disk - C drive - double click on the “Tewp” file, double click on “word parser” and then delete the “ license key

7.    If the Word Parser is not visible in MS Office, go to File → Options → Add-ins. If it appears under Inactive Add-ins, it may be due to installing the wrong bit version. In that case, please reinstall the software with the correct version.

8.     If it is disabled, go to the Manage option at the bottom, select Disabled Items from the dropdown, and click the Go button. Then, select Think Exam Word Parser and click Enable.


 

                   Use the essay format from the ribbon D-X. or D-X). Add ##End Essay once the essay ends.

                   For Merge type questions, follow the same format M-X. or M-X) and end with ##End Merge.

2.  Images

 

                   Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, and screenshots.

                   Images can be pasted directly into the Word file, but must be in JPEG or PNG format only.

 

3.  Equations

 

                   All equations must be added using the Equation tool in Word.

                   Do not insert equations as plain text.

 


4.  Tag Sheet

 

                   Only small letters should be used for correct answers.

                   Example: “a” instead of “A.”

                   If capital letters are used, correct answers will not be marked on the panel.

                   Subject name and Topic name in the tag sheet must be an exact match with the panel.

                   Example : If the subject is added as English on the panel, it must also be written as

English in the tag sheet. Writing it as english (all lowercase) will not map correctly..

 

5.  List Type Questions

 

                   Add ##Start List F2 before the statements.

                   Use F2 if you want numbering in I., II., III. format. Other list types may be chosen as required.

                   Add ##End List at the end of the question.

                   Do not use Roman numeral bullets directly before the question.

 

6.  Demo preview check before uploading

 

                   Verify that the question text appears correctly below the question.

                   Ensure all options are displayed properly.

                   If the answer and solution are available in the Word file, confirm that they also appear in the Answer tab as well as in the Solution section.
